| Cabbage Root FlyPeter has been allotment gardening for 40 years and this how he avoids attacks of cabbage root fly. When the plants are ready to be placed in their final position they should still have their seed leaves on and these need to be removed. At this stage kitchen foil 25mm wide and 70mm long should be wrapped in a spiral wrap from as close to the root as possible upwards. The plant is put into the ground bringing the soil to the stem and making firm all around. This then prevents the egg of the fly when hatched into grubs from eating the stems and so rendering the plants useless. Peter demonstrated the effectiveness of this method last summer when he planted several unprotected plants which were attached by the larvae of the cabbage root fly. |
